This edited reading follows Lucía’s full lesson, published on 24 August 2024. Punctuation, automatic-caption errors and a few spoken agreements are corrected; repetitions are shortened. The first-person views remain Lucía’s. Figures, proposals and words such as “recently” describe the episode’s 2024 context.

About the figures: Visitor totals depend on whether day visitors and overnight tourists are both included. The protest organizers’ July 2024 manifesto counted approximately 31 million annual Barcelona visitors, about half visiting only for the day. For 2023, the Barcelona Tourism Observatory estimated 15.6 million overnight tourists in the city and approximately 26 million across the city and region. Lucía’s rounded 30-million figure is compatible with a count including day visitors; it is not the same measure as city-only overnight tourism. Annual arrivals represent visits across a year, rather than people present at once.

English translation

Why, if Spain depends on tourism? Today I’m going to explain the background and the problem while you practice your listening comprehension and learn new vocabulary.

English translation

In recent months there have been demonstrations in the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands and Málaga. Now in Barcelona too. More than 3,000 people had demonstrated against tourism in Barcelona. Some people spraying tourists with water pistols made newspaper headlines.

0:55 · Cinco razones

English translation

They did this to draw attention, and people were very surprised. So was I. Why are Spaniards demonstrating against tourism? I’ll explain five reasons to help you understand the problem. The last is the main and most important one.

1:17 · 1. Ciudades saturadas

English translation

Cities are saturated and overcrowded. Spain is the second most visited country in the world. More than 80 million tourists visit Spain each year. In the video I compare the 30 million tourists visiting Barcelona with its 1.5 million inhabitants; the 14 million visiting the Balearic Islands with their 1.2 million inhabitants; and the 14 million visiting the Canary Islands with their 2.2 million inhabitants. There is a big difference.

English translation

In Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and the Canary Islands, the beaches can’t fit any more people. They are absolutely packed. These are small islands that cannot accommodate so much tourism, and local people cannot live peacefully. The same happens in Málaga, another coastal city. There isn’t room for a pin on the beaches: a pin is something very, very small.

2:42 · 2. Impacto ambiental

English translation

The Canary and Balearic Islands have water-supply problems: there isn’t enough water for so many people. Spain generally experiences a lot of drought because it does not rain much, but the islands face particular difficulties. Water runs out because too many people use the reserves. Tourism also creates more rubbish and waste than the system can manage.

English translation

Many local shops are closing to make way for businesses aimed at tourists, such as souvenir shops, luggage lockers and hotels. There is less and less local atmosphere because fewer places cater to people other than tourists.

English translation

Cities receiving more tourists are changing to suit foreign visitors’ tastes rather than those of the people who live there. They are adapting to what tourists want to see. The companies are to blame for this, not the individual tourist. They only think about earning more and more money, and holidaymakers spend more than the Spaniards who live there.

English translation

English translation

Some tourists’ behavior also causes problems. Some seem to come to Spain just to do things they cannot do in their own countries. They are in holiday mode, ready to party, without work or study, simply enjoying themselves. Some drink a lot and cause trouble. There are quite a few incidents like this, but the main issue comes next.

English translation

The main reason is the rising cost of living. Prices in Spain have increased a lot: leisure activities, especially in tourist areas; public and private transport; bars and restaurants; and, above all, housing.

English translation

Tourist rental apartments push up the prices of other flats and houses because they command very high rents. There is a lot of speculation: people buy apartments to let them at high prices to holidaymakers. That leaves fewer homes for Spaniards and sends prices soaring.

6:06 · Propuestas y dificultades

English translation

On the islands, people want to impose a limit so that only residents can buy homes, rather than people who use them for only a few months each year or rent them to tourists at very high prices. At the moment, it is a major problem because Spaniards are running out of places to live.

6:30 · Compartir piso

English translation

The only way to live in the center of a city such as Madrid, Barcelona or Málaga is to share an apartment with two, three, four or more other people. In Barcelona, rents have increased by 68% over the past decade, the past ten years. That is a huge increase.

English translation

Barcelona City Council recently announced a plan to eliminate the city’s almost 10,000 tourist apartments within the next five years, prioritizing residential use over tourist accommodation.

English translation

The Spaniards who demonstrated do not want tourists to stop coming. That isn’t the point. They want tourism to avoid worsening residents’ quality of life. Those are different things. They oppose the mass-tourism industry, not the tourists themselves.

English translation

That is why I think it was very wrong to spray the tourists with water instead of the property owner who removed tenants to rent their home to tourists; the souvenir shops selling products made in China rather than local products; government and council members failing to regulate tourism; or companies buying whole apartment buildings to turn them into hotels.

English translation

The problem is tourism management and those who manage it. Local people want a balance between everyday life and tourism.

English translation

When the water-pistol story appeared, Spaniards in other cities were shocked. They rejected the action and invited tourists to other Spanish cities where they would be treated better. In general, from what I have seen, Spaniards really like tourists and are not against tourism at all.

English translation

My personal view is that I like having tourists. I love the international atmosphere and cities full of life and variety. Tourism brings positive things: new perspectives and new stories. Someone from another country can teach you so many interesting things.

English translation

But life has become much more expensive for Spaniards in recent years. I would like to live alone in a studio apartment in Madrid, but it is impossible for me. And tourism is not the only cause.

English translation

I hope you now understand the background to the demonstrations calling for better-controlled tourism. What do you think about this issue? How could it be solved? What should we do when we travel as tourists? Tell me in the comments. Here is another video to practice your Spanish. See you soon!

Vocabulary from the episode

  • llamar la atención — draw attention
  • no cabe un alfiler — it is absolutely packed (literally, “not even a pin fits”)
  • abastecimiento de agua — water supply
  • la lían — they cause trouble, from the colloquial expression liarla
  • inquilino / inquilina — tenant
  • compartir piso — share an apartment
  • gestión — management
  • punto de vista — point of view
  • un estudio — a studio apartment, in Lucía’s housing example

Historical context for the numbers and proposals

The INE’s provisional 2023 tourism figures recorded 85.1 million international tourists in Spain, 14.4 million in the Balearic Islands and 13.9 million in the Canary Islands. These give the context for the rounded figures in the episode.

The EFE’s report of the city’s June 2024 announcement describes it as a plan not to renew 10,101 tourist-accommodation licenses in November 2028. That clarifies the episode’s approximate “almost 10,000” and “next five years.” The island home-buying limits are proposals described by Lucía, rather than a statement that such a rule was in force.

The 68% rent-rise figure is presented as Lucía’s historical figure. An interview with municipal housing and tourism official Jordi Valls also describes a 68% rise between 2013 and 2023. Lucía’s remarks about sharing a flat and affording a studio express the housing difficulties she describes and her personal circumstances.
