  • Quizás aquí encuentre algo por un euro. Me he ido porque no pone el precio en ningún sitio, y para mí eso es mala señal. En la churrería del vlog con mi amiga Montse, el mínimo es un euro con ochenta y las bebidas, al menos un euro con cincuenta. Así que no.Maybe I’ll find something for one euro here. I left because the price isn’t displayed anywhere, and to me that’s a bad sign. At the churro shop from the vlog with my friend Montse, the minimum is €1.80 and drinks cost at least €1.50. So that won’t work.
  • Hay un supermercado con pastelería; quizás sea más barato. No sé por qué se han subido aquí a la parra. En este contexto lo digo porque se han flipado y ponen precios supercaros. Cuando ves precios muy altos, puedes decir: «Uf, se han subido a la parra». ¡Va a llegar la hora de comer y aún no he desayunado!There’s a supermarket with a bakery; maybe it’s cheaper. I don’t know why they’ve gone overboard here. I say se han subido a la parra in this context because they’re charging really high prices. When you see very high prices, you can say, “They’ve gone overboard.” It’s nearly lunchtime and I still haven’t had breakfast!

Reading note: Subirse a la parra literally suggests climbing a grapevine. Here Lucía uses it to complain that the sellers are getting carried away with their prices. The idiom also has other contextual meanings; it is not simply a literal description of climbing.

3:00 · Finding a chocolate pastry

  • Entro al supermercado y veo la pastelería. Por menos de un euro puedo pillar una flauta de chocolate o de crema. Los minicroissants tienen una pintaza increíble, pero son muy pequeños. No me importa comer poco: se me ha hecho tarde para desayunar y, si como mucho, luego no tendré hambre para almorzar.I go into the supermarket and find the bakery. For under a euro I can get a long pastry filled with chocolate or cream. The mini croissants look amazing but are very small. I don’t mind eating a little: breakfast is late, and if I eat a lot I won’t be hungry for lunch.
  • También hay palmeritas, aunque una es muy pequeña. Creo que voy a coger una flauta, pero primero miraré qué puedo beber.There are small palmier pastries too, although one is tiny. I think I’ll get a flauta, but first I’ll see what I can drink.

Reading note: A flauta here is an elongated filled pastry, not a musical flute. Palmeritas are the small palmier-style puff pastries in the bakery. Pillar is informal for get or buy in this conversation.

3:38 · Coffee, snacks, juices and the winner

  • Eso cuesta noventa céntimos, pero es café y yo no tomo café: no me gusta. Un Nesquik me habría venido divino. Aquí hay Filipinos y barquillos de nata o chocolate.That costs ninety cents, but it’s coffee, and I don’t drink coffee: I don’t like it. A Nesquik would have been wonderful. Here there are Filipinos biscuits and cream or chocolate wafers.
  • Por un euro también hay varias unidades de donuts o palmeritas, que sirven para desayunar y merendar. Para no morir de hambre, es muy buena idea. Me encantan estos hojaldres de miel.For one euro there are packs of doughnuts or little palmiers, enough for breakfast and a snack. That’s a good idea for not starving. I love these honey-flavored puff pastries.
  • Zumo de manzana, ochenta céntimos. Hay de piña, uva y manzana; el de melocotón y uva cuesta un euro. ¡Una limonada por cincuenta céntimos! Creo que tenemos ganador. Me voy a pillar la flauta.Apple juice is eighty cents. There’s pineapple, grape and apple juice; peach and grape costs a euro. Lemonade for fifty cents! I think we have a winner.   • Voy a buscar un sitio para sentarme a comer mi flauta de chocolate y tomarme la limonada. ¡Es grande! Mirad mi cara. Está muy buena: la panadería del MAS tiene buena fama.I’ll find a place to sit and eat my chocolate pastry with the lemonade. It’s big! Look at my face. It’s very good: the MAS bakery has a good reputation.
  • La limonada no es mi bebida favorita y no la suelo tomar, pero era muy barata. Pues está muy bien por cincuenta céntimos. Otra opción es llevar una botella vacía y rellenarla en las fuentes públicas de agua para beber.Lemonade isn’t my favorite drink and I don’t usually have it, but it was very cheap. It’s good for fifty cents. Another option is to carry an empty bottle and refill it at public drinking-water fountains.
  • Desayuno: cincuenta céntimos por la limonada y ochenta y cinco por la flauta de chocolate. Me quedan ocho euros con sesenta y cinco. Eso de ahí es una fuente de agua.Breakfast: fifty cents for the lemonade and eighty-five for the chocolate pastry. I have €8.65 left. That over there is a water fountain.

  • Ahí está el cuponero vendiendo cupones de la ONCE. Comento que son sorteos de mucho dinero. Si me sobra dinero hoy, que no creo, me compro un cupón. ¡A ver si me hago millonaria!There’s the lottery-ticket seller, selling ONCE tickets. I say the draws offer a lot of money. If I have money left today, which I doubt, I’ll buy a ticket. Let’s see if I become a millionaire!
  • Si me tocase el cupón, me compraría una guitarra eléctrica nueva, o dos, y viajaría mucho. ¿Vosotros qué haríais? Escribídmelo en los comentarios en español, para practicar. ¡Mirad qué bonita esta tienda, qué estética!If I won, I’d buy a new electric guitar, or two, and travel a lot. What would you do?   • Con el agua me han entrado unas ganas de hacer pis… ¡Es un problema! Puedes decir: «Me hago pipí» o «Me hago pis». Una frase más vulgar que usamos entre amigos es: «Me estoy meando». «¡Me meo encima! ¡Corre, corre!».The water has suddenly made me need to pee… It’s a problem! You can say Me hago pipí or Me hago pis: “I need to pee.” A more vulgar phrase we use among friends is Me estoy meando: “I’m bursting for a pee.” Me meo encima means “I’m going to wet myself!” “Run, run!”
  • Cuando necesito ir al baño, vengo al Corte Inglés tranquilamente. Ya he hecho pis y me encuentro mucho mejor: tengo la mente mucho más despejada.When I need the bathroom, I come to El Corte Inglés. I’ve peed now and feel much better: my mind is much clearer.

Reading note: These me hago… and me estoy… expressions convey urgency in this exchange. Mear is marked malsonante in the RAE dictionary; preserve that stronger register when choosing where to use it.

  • Son cerca de las dos: es hora de comer. Vamos a ver qué consigo por tres euros. Hoy es miércoles y en 100 Montaditos hay una promoción de un euro. Creo que las bebidas ya no están incluidas; antes recordaba que los miércoles y domingos todo era a un euro.It’s nearly two: lunchtime. Let’s see what I can get for three euros. It’s Wednesday and 100 Montaditos has a one-euro promotion. I think drinks are no longer included; I remembered everything costing a euro on Wednesdays and Sundays.
  • Cada montadito tiene un número y lo pides con ese número. —Hola, buenas. Voy a pedir tres montaditos: el catorce, el quince y el noventa y ocho. Eso sería todo. —Tres euros. —Sí, justo. Luego recojo el pedido: «¿El cinco, creo?». ¡Gracias!Each little sandwich has a number, and you order by number. “Hello. I’ll have three montaditos: fourteen, fifteen and ninety-eight. That’s all.” “Three euros.” “Yes, the exact amount.” Later I collect the order: “Number five, I think?” Thank you!

Reading note: The brand’s current Euromanía conditions distinguish €1 montaditos from other categories and exclude drinks; availability and terms depend on the participating venue. The vlog records her actual three-sandwich purchase, rather than a promise that every menu item costs €1.

8:58 · Lunch and a chocolate treat

  • Tengo tres montaditos con patatas fritas: uno de tortilla con mojo picón, otro de tortilla con salsa brava y otro de tres quesos. No es lo mejor del mundo, pero está bien. ¡Estoy superllena! Con dos habría comido bien, porque desayuné muy tarde.I have three montaditos with potato chips: one potato-omelet sandwich with mojo picón sauce, another with salsa brava, and one with three cheeses. It isn’t the best thing in the world, but it’s okay. I’m really full! Two would have been enough because breakfast was so late.
  • Me quedan cinco euros con sesenta y cinco para comer hoy. Yo creo que vamos bien. Quiero un bollo que me encanta: un pan relleno de chocolate. Igual es demasiado, porque hoy he comido pan, pan y más pan… demasiado trigo. Pero me voy a dar un capricho para merendar.I have €5.65 left for today’s food. I think we’re doing well. I want a pastry I love: a chocolate-filled bread roll. Maybe it’s too much, since today has been bread, bread and more bread… too much wheat. But I’ll treat myself for my afternoon snack.

Su pan relleno de chocolate me recuerda al Bollycao, el bollo que nos encantaba de niños.We’re going to Domi Vélez’s bakery; he has the world’s-best-baker award. His chocolate-filled bread reminds me of Bollycao, the treat we loved as children.
  • —Yo quiero el Domicao. ¿Cuánto cuesta el normal? —Un euro con noventa y cinco. —Pues uno, por favor. ¡Buah, está buenísimo! Parece un pan normal, pero no lo es. Igual beberé agua para merendar; no pasa nada, merece la pena.“I want the Domicao. How much is the regular one?” “One euro ninety-five.” “One, please.” Wow, it’s delicious! Reading note: The bakery identifies Domi Vélez’s award as Mejor Panadero del Mundo 2021. Lucía’s “best in the world” refers to that title and her enthusiasm for the pastry.

  • Mercadona suele tener una sección de platos preparados para calentar en el microondas. Me quedan tres euros con setenta. Mi primera idea era una tortilla de patatas con cebolla por dos euros con ochenta: para mí, la mejor tortilla de supermercado. Con media he cenado muy bien.Mercadona usually has a section of prepared dishes to heat in the microwave. I have €3.70 left. My first idea was a potato omelet with onion for €2.80: to me, the best supermarket omelet. Half has been a good dinner for me.
  • Pero llevo una semana comiendo tortilla casi todos los días y dos montaditos de hoy llevaban tortilla. Vamos a buscar otra opción. Hay sándwiches y platos para quienes comen carne o pescado; yo no como carne. Estas patatas me gustan, pero quiero algo más nutritivo.But I’ve eaten omelet almost every day for a week, and two of today’s sandwiches had it. Let’s find something else. There are sandwiches and dishes for people who eat meat or fish; I don’t eat meat. I like these potatoes, but I want something more nutritious.

  • La crema me parece un poco cara; voy a mirar si hay otra opción. ¡Exactamente lo mismo, pero más barato: un euro! Esta será mi cena de hoy. Quiero añadir algo para que no se quede tan pobre; pienso en algo de proteína, como un huevo.The soup seems a little expensive; I’ll look for another option. Después remuevo el contenido; un minuto más y listo. ¡Que aproveche!It’s dinner time: ten at night. I pour the pumpkin soup into the bowl and put it in the microwave. Then I stir it; another minute and it’s ready. Enjoy your meal!
