0:00 — Listen to real weekend stories

English: Do you know what we do in Spain on weekends? I’m going to tell you in Spanish so you can learn with me. Stay until the end, because my friends will also tell us what they did last weekend, and you will hear real Spanish as it is actually spoken. This is great practice for understanding native speakers. Pay close attention, because I’m going to ask you questions afterward. If you need English or Spanish subtitles, you can turn them on down here.

0:31 — Weekend plans in Spain

English: In Spain, generally speaking, weekends are for enjoying yourself. We usually meet friends and make more special plans than during the week. But we also use them to rest and recharge for work the following week. Of course, some people also work on weekends, but generally everyone likes making plans, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays. For example, I usually make plans to go out for lunch or dinner with friends, watch a film and see my family. I go for dinner with my father and visit my grandparents.

1:04 — What Lucía did last weekend

English: Last weekend, for example, on Friday I went for dinner at an Asian restaurant with a friend. Then we spent some time at my place chatting and watching funny videos on YouTube. On Saturday morning I went for a run, sang and played the guitar. I also made a sponge cake and then had lunch with my mother and my aunt.

English: In the afternoon, I had invited some friends over for an afternoon snack, and we ate the cake I had made that morning. Then we stayed together longer and ended up watching a film at my place. On Sunday morning I visited my grandparents and had breakfast with them. Then I tidied and cleaned my whole home. That evening I went to my father’s house for dinner with him; he had cooked some delicious creamed spinach. Afterward, back at home, I got ready for bed at a relaxed pace so I could get up early the next day.

English: Did you understand everything? At My Daily Spanish, we help you improve your Spanish with our free guide, The Free Study Guide. You can download it by scanning the QR code on screen or using the link in the video description. Now let’s hear what my friends Sofía and Pablo did last weekend. First, Sofía’s weekend—she’s from Madrid. Listen.

English: Well, on Friday I did my favorite thing of the whole week: meet up with my longtime friends and go down to the bar below my home to eat our favorite “fantastic sandwich.” That’s what it’s called—a fantastic sandwich—with pork loin, bacon, egg… Then we went to bed late after talking about all our dramas of the week. On Saturday I went to my boxing class and then did some meditation at home. I showered and went out for lunch and a walk in Retiro Park with my boyfriend.

English: Then we had dinner at our favorite sushi restaurant and walked around Madrid until we caught the “búho”—the night bus—to get home. On Sunday I met some other friends to go to Madrid’s Rastro market, have an aperitif around Cava Baja and walk to our favorite café for cheesecake. Then I went home and spent the afternoon with a film and a blanket. And off to bed early for work on Monday.

3:23 — Original question 1: Sofía’s weekend

Speaker: Lucía

Spanish: ¿Te has enterado bien de todo? ¡Vamos a comprobarlo!

English: Did you understand everything? Let’s check! I’m going to give you three sentences: two false and one true. Which sentence about Sofía’s weekend is true?

3:36 — Original question 1

English: Which sentence about Sofía’s weekend is true?

— On Saturday morning, Sofía meditated in the park.
— On Friday, Sofía met her longtime friends.
— On Saturday night, Sofía returned home by metro.
Show the original answer

Original answer: B.

English: Well, on Friday I did my favorite thing of the whole week: meet up with my longtime friends…

The original video reveals B and replays Sofía’s words. Editorial explanation: her meditation was at home, and she returned on the night bus, not the metro.

4:02 — A faster message from Seville

Speakers: Lucía, then Pablo

Spanish: Genial.

English: Great. Now we’ll raise the level and listen to my friend Pablo, from Seville. He speaks faster and has an Andalusian accent, from southern Spain. Listen carefully: this one is a little harder, but you can do it. Yes! Let’s go.

English: Well, you know, on Friday I left work at two, went for lunch with my colleagues, stayed until the bar closed, then went to the other one nearby and ended up staying until that one closed too, actually. I got home after midnight that day. I brushed my teeth and went to bed, really.

Me quedé dormido. Fatal aquello, vamos.

English: On Saturday I had to get up early, but I overslept: I was supposed to meet a friend. We had arranged to go into the center to buy some things we needed and have a wander. I overslept. A complete disaster, honestly. My friend got annoyed, and I had to buy her an ice cream so she would forgive me, but anyway. In the afternoon I went to eat with some friends, had dinner with them and went home to bed. Sunday was more relaxed: I got up at eleven in the morning, did the little things I had pending, prepared food for the following week and went to bed fairly early.

Learner note — Informal speech: In this message, tía is an informal form of address, movidas means “things” or “stuff,” and tranqui means “relaxed.” Cerramos el bar means they stayed until closing in this story; it does not say they owned or locked the bar. Accent features vary by speaker; southern Spanish pronunciation may reduce some syllable-final sounds without changing the written words. Source: RAE: regional realizations of s.

5:07 — Original question 2: Pablo’s weekend

Speaker: Lucía

Spanish: ¿Lo habéis entendido? Vamos con las tres frases. ¿Cuál es la verdadera?

English: Did you understand it? Here are the three sentences. Which one is true?

5:12 — Original question 2

¿Cuál es la verdadera?
English: Which sentence is true?

— On Friday, Pablo got home after midnight.
— Pablo’s friend bought Pablo an ice cream for arriving late.
— On Sunday, Pablo had arranged to eat with some friends.
Show the original answer

Original answer: A.

The original video reveals A and replays Pablo’s words. Editorial explanation: Pablo bought his friend the ice cream, and his meal with friends was on Saturday, not Sunday.
