Edited lesson transcript: 200 everyday Spanish nouns

This reading companion follows Lucia’s English explanations and all 200 numbered Spanish vocabulary entries, including their regional alternatives and the video’s examples. It is organized by topic and timestamp. Repetition and pauses are trimmed for reading; labeled notes correct a few card glosses and factual shortcuts.

Are you starting to learn Spanish and ready to have conversations? Lucia introduces 200 useful nouns to help you make yourself understood. She mentions a free PDF with the words in the original video description and recommends watching and listening first for pronunciation and examples, then using the PDF to review. The lesson covers time, nature, the city, common objects, clothing, professions, food and body parts, with a favorite word at the end. “Aren’t you excited? Because I am! ¡Empecemos!”

36:35 · Lucia’s favorite word: merienda

For the last word, Lucia shares a personal favorite to use when you visit Spain. She presents it as a word that does not translate neatly into English: merienda. In this context, it means an afternoon snack or light afternoon meal. The cultural routine may not have an exact one-word equivalent for every English speaker, but its meaning can certainly be explained in English.

  • 200. la merienda
Entre el almuerzo y la cena está la merienda. Mi comida favorita.
    afternoon snack; light afternoon meal
Between lunch and dinner comes the afternoon snack. My favorite meal.

In Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, merienda is often treated as a fourth meal between lunch and dinner. There is also the verb merendar, to have this snack:

  • Yo meriendo.I have an afternoon snack.
  • Tú meriendas. You have an afternoon snack.
  • Él merienda. / Ella merienda. He has an afternoon snack. / She has an afternoon snack.

It is usually accompanied by coffee, tea or chocolate milk, and it can be savory, sweet or both. “Always sweet for me,” says Lucia. “Sounds nice, right?” The RAE definition of merienda includes a light meal in the afternoon.

37:27 · Closing: Great job — you have reached the end of the 200-word lesson! Lucia recommends the video of 100 beginner phrases shown at the end, so you can start using words in conversations. “See you there!”
